No need to wait until May 7 to cast a vote either for or against the building of a new Rainbow Beach.
Early voting has begun.
Clerk-treasurer Lisa Clark-Benock said early and absentee voting has started and already a handful of people have come in to cast their votes in an upcoming referendum that will decide whether the city will spend up to $3.8 million on a new pool to replace the aged Rainbow Beach.
Just like with any regular election, Clark-Benock said registered voters need only make a trip to the voter registration office, located on the second floor of the courthouse, to cast a vote.
People can also now call either 812-895-4927 or 812-895-4928 to request an application for an absentee ballot. Election workers will immediately send out the application, and once it is returned properly filled out and signed, the absentee ballot will follow, she said.
The courthouse also will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on two upcoming Saturdays, April 27 and May 4.
Early voting will close at noon on May 6, Clark-Benock said.
The 150-word question voters will be met with essentially asks if they support a bond issue not to exceed $3.8 million to build the new, 8,300-square-foot pool, one with a laundry list of child and family-friendly amenities.
The real cost, however, will likely be closer to $3.4 million, according to Steve Beaman, superintendent of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, and any money raised should the referendum pass but before the bonds are sold will be taken of that total.
At the full $3.8 million, a homeowner would pay less than 8 cents per $100 of assessed valuation in new taxes.
