Palladium-Item Reports Budget Talks Begin in Wayne County

From the Richmond Palladium-Item:

Wayne County officials this week began work on the county’s proposed 2014 budget with meetings Tuesday and Wednesday.

Officials listened to requests from department heads and then met with representatives of the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance on Thursday to get an inkling as to what kind of funding might be available for next year.

“I think we will have a better idea of what we’ll have in the days ahead,” said Wayne County Councilman Chris Beeson. “With department heads, we listened to their requests and the explanation. It went very well, and there were no major disagreements.”

On Wednesday, the county clerk, recorder, probation office, prosecutor and others presented initial budget requests. One of the larger departments, the county health department, also presented preliminary budget numbers.

The health department’s proposed budget is roughly $3 million, but most of that comes from grants, co-pays and reimbursements. An estimated $700,000 would come from property tax, or general fund, dollars.

On Thursday, larger budgets, such as the sheriff and highway departments and the commissioners, were presented. The proposed highway department budget is about $3 million while the sheriff’s budget is more than $6 million and the commissioners’ budget is $7.5 million.
