Star Reports Revenue's Phone System Overwhelmed by Calls Regarding New Electronic Tax Filing Requirement

From the Indianapolis Star:

...

Last year, state lawmakers required all Indiana businesses to file sales and withholding taxes eletronically. Many businesses use the state’s online system, which is called INtax.

The law went into effect Jan. 1. For most businesses, that means they had to begin filing and paying electronically no later than the end of February, when January’s sales and withholding taxes are due.

Officials couldn’t immediately provide details about the scope of the problem, but they attributed it at least in part to a big influx of phone calls regarding the new online filing requirement.

“What we’re seeing is an awful lot of phone calls from our new registrants,” Dittmer said. “Our call system does have limitations on it.”

He recommended that business owners email the department and check out the INtax Quickstart Guide on the department’s website,www.in.gov/dor.

Mosley said the department doesn’t expect the problem to affect collections. Most businesses have until the end of the month to file their returns, so this week’s issues with the phone lines shouldn’t cause anyone to be penalized, she said.
