Star-Press Reports Delaware County Tax Bills Lost in the Mail

From the Muncie Star-Press:

Hundreds of Delaware County residents — or as many as a couple of thousand — didn’t receive spring property tax bills through some still-unexplained snafu.

Much of the problem seems centered on Hamilton Township north of Muncie, where 2,617 tax bills were mailed to property owners but few were delivered.

“I’m saying 5 percent got them,” County Treasurer John Dorer told The Star Press on Monday. “And 95 percent didn’t. What happened to those bills? We have no idea.”

Property owners were expressing frustration Monday, four days before Friday’s deadline for payment of the spring installment of taxes.

Dorer and county information technology director Jim Flook said Monday the bills were processed and prepared for mailing. Countywide, 68,500 bills were prepared.

The treasurer’s office sees a few thousand tax bills returned each year because of incorrect addresses, but Dorer said the bills that didn’t get delivered recently appeared to have had the correct addresses. An unknown number of bills from outside Hamilton Township also didn’t connect with property owners, he said.

Dorer said he is working with mailing contractor Midwest Presort and the postal service to determine what happened.

In the meantime, payments are still required by May 10, and can be made this week at the treasurer’s office or at local banks, Dorer said. The treasurer set up a table in the lobby of the Delaware County Building as a first step for people needing information before they pay.

Dorer noted Monday that his office will be closed for a week after Friday’s property tax payment deadline for bookkeeping.
