Tribune Reports Goshen Schools to Consider Transportation Cuts

From the South Bend Tribune:

More students could be walking to school and funding for field trips could be cut under proposals the Goshen School Board is considering.

The Elkhart Truth reports the changes are included in recommendations from a committee looking for ways to close a shortfall in the Goshen Community Schools' transportation budget.

The proposals include expanding "walk zones" for several schools, reducing the number of bus stops by using hubs where students can be picked up and requiring each school or organization to pay for transportation for field trips or after-school activities.

Assistant superintendent of transportation and education services Robert Evans says Goshen is looking at a $1 million shortfall because of property tax caps. He says the savings from the suggested changes would save only about $400,000.
