Herald-Argus Reports Property Tax Deadline Nears in LaPorte

La Porte County Treasurer Nancy Hawkins has announced that the final due date for the 2010 pay 2011 reconciliation bill is fast approaching.

The 2010 pay 2011 reconciliation bill was mailed Jan. 14 and had an original due date of Feb. 14.

The La Porte County Council, in compliance with state law, passed an ordinance giving the taxpayers a full six months from the mailing date to pay this reconciliation bill without penalty. Therefore, the final date to pay any outstanding tax liability for 2011 is July 15.

If taxpayers are uncertain as to whether or not they paid their bill earlier, they can contact the Treasurer’s office in either La Porte or Michigan City to ask if they have anything due.

The next tax bill to be mailed will be the 2011 pay 2012 reconciliation bill. This will be the final reconciliation bill from past tax years. Hawkins said they anticipate mailing this bill by Aug. 15.

The bill for the current year’s taxes, 2012 pay 2013, will then be mailed as a single payment bill sometime in November.

For 2014, La Porte County should be back to on-time billing with a mailing in April and payments due in May and November.
