News Reports Raising Property Taxes on Shelby County Council Agenda

From the Shelbyville News:

The Shelbyville Common Council will again take up a measure that raises property taxes.

The council will consider re-establishing the cumulative capital development fund today at 7 p.m. at Shelbyville City Hall, 44 W. Washington St.

The ordinance would raise property taxes about 2-1/2 cents per every $100 of value.

The ordinance died at the last council meeting when two members, Ron Hamilton and David Carmony, voted against it. Two other members were absent that meeting, so the council was unable to get a majority.

The purpose of re-establishing the fund is to have more money to pay for emergency vehicles, such as police cars, ambulances and firetrucks.

Several police vehicles were bought with racino money earlier this year.

The amount the fund brings in dwindles on its own if it is not re-established, so the fund doesn’t bring in as much revenue as it did in years past.
