The elimination of Mike Gaskill and Mike Phipps from the Madison County Council in January and the election of a new Democratic majority could mean quick reconsideration of the wheel tax that was eliminated earlier this year.
The $25 surcharge on vehicle registrations was anathema to the new, sharply conservative Republican majority.
Although money raised through the tax was dedicated to road paving, repair and maintenance, they argued Madison County residents were taxed enough, and quickly eliminated it.
City and town officials were furious with the move, however, because there was no consultation before the vote to rescind the tax occurred in late February.
Although mayors, town managers and city and town councilmen during one long public meeting urged the county council to consider phase-out of the tax over time, it was clear minds were made up.
