The appeal deadline is fast approaching for Marion County homeowners who are experiencing sticker shock from their new property assessments.
Appeals from homeowners and other property owners asking for reconsideration must be hand-delivered to one of the Marion County assessor’s offices or postmarked in the mail by Monday. For property owners in other metro-area counties, the deadline already has passed.
The values of 52 percent of Marion County homes increased in last year’s reassessment, which was the first wholesale reappraisal of property values in a decade. Of those that went up, 30 percent saw increases of greater than 10 percent. The assessor’s office sent out notices listing the new values last month.
The upshot of higher assessments often will be higher property taxes when bills go out this spring.
