NWI Reports American Licorice and Dawn Products Offered Tax Credits for Expansion

American Licorice Company is planning a $10 million investment in its LaPorte manufacturing plant that will create 35 new jobs by 2015, the company announced late Tuesday.
The candy and licorice manufacturer plans to equip and renovate its 285,000 square foot facility at 1900 Whirlpool Drive with the installation of a licorice production line and a rail spur to allow the company to receive ingredients by rail.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered American Licorice up to $200,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company's job creation plans. The incentives are contingent upon the hiring of Indiana residents.
The City of LaPorte approved additional tax abatements at the request of the Greater LaPorte Economic Development Corporation.

Dawn Food Products has plans to consolidate its Crown Point and Munster facilities into one distribution center in Merrillville.
A new 120,000-square-foot facility would be constructed in the AmeriPlex at the Crossroads development near Broadway and 101st Avenue, said Derith Jarvis, director of research and site selection at Mohr Partners, a corporate real estate advisory and consulting firm.
The new facility represents a $15 million to $20 million investment, Jarvis said.

The Merrillville Town Council on Tuesday unanimously approved 10-year real estate and personal property tax abatement for the Dawn Food Products project.
"I think it's gonna be a good addition to the town," said Councilman Tom Goralczyk, chairman of Merrillville's Economic Development Committee.
