Elkhart County Commissioners Schedule Tax Sale for March 4th

From the Elkhart Truth:

Fourteen pieces of land in New Paris and Elkhart will go on sale as part of a special auction early this spring.

For the first time since 2010, the Elkhart County Commissioners plan to hold a property tax certificate sale in an attempt to get delinquent properties back on the county’s tax rolls. The parcels chosen for the auction have been part of at least one of the county’s tax sales in the past and did not get sold.

A preliminary sale will be held at 10 a.m. on March 4 at the Elkhart County Administration Building in Goshen featuring the 14 properties. Two to four weeks later, another sale is expected to be held with an additional list of 450 other properties. Tom Byers, county administrator, said the commissioners will likely make a decision on Jan. 22 whether to hold the second certificate sale. The second list of properties have total back taxes that add up to roughly $5.8 million.

The preliminary sale will include the Orbitron Products Inc. property at 1100 W. Beardsley Ave. in Elkhart, which has more than $2.2 million in back taxes and penalties owed to the county. The piece of land has been part of nine county tax sales but was never sold, Byers said. The minimum bid for the Orbitron property will be set at $55,000.

Multiple parcels owned by Hoskins Manufacturing Company on S.R. 15 in New Paris will also be part of the preliminary certificate sale with minimum bids as low as $190. The 13 properties have back taxes and penalties owed to the county totaling almost $411,000.
