From the LaPorte Herald-Angus:
La Porte County Treasurer Nancy Hawkins has announced that the 2010 pay 2011 reconciliation property tax bills will be mailed to taxpayers on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
The due date for this reconciliation bill is Feb. 14, 2013.
This is also the final date to pay without penalty the 2008 pay 2009 and 2009 pay 2010 combined reconciliation bill that was originally mailed last August.
The County Council has passed an ordinance to allow taxpayers to make payments on this latest reconciliation bill over a six month period with the final payment being due no later than July 15, 2013, in order to avoid penalties.
Payments for this tax bill, as with all tax bills, can be made in a variety of ways.
The payments can be made at any La Porte County branch of Horizon Bank by presenting your payment and the tax coupon.
Payments can also be made by credit card through a link at the county’s website at www.laportecounty.org or at Horizon Bank.
Payments can be mailed to P.O. Box J, Michigan City, IN 46361-0319.
Normally, your cancelled check will serve as your receipt but if a receipt is needed, a stamped, self-addressed envelope must be included.
The treasurer’s office maintains drop boxes at both the Michigan City and La Porte courthouses and payments will be accepted at the drop boxes through 3:30 p.m. on the final due date. Again, a stamped, self-addressed envelope must be included if a receipt is needed.
Of course, payment can also be made in person at either the Treasurer’s La Porte Office at 555 Michigan Ave. or at the Michigan City Office at 302 W. Eighth St.
However, taxpayers should be aware that long lines may be encountered when paying in person at the treasurer’s offices and therefore, Hawkins encourages taxpayers to use one of the alternatives listed above.
The treasurer’s office, like all other county offices, will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Day and on Monday, Feb. 11 in observance of Lincoln’s Birthday.
The treasurer’s office can be reached by phone at 326-6808, ext. 2245 or in Michigan City at 219-874-5611, ext. 7782.
