For the fifth year since re-incorporating as a town, Fairland town officials gave approval Tuesday night to its 2014 budget.
"This is our fifth year, and we'd like to think we've gotten a hang on how to do these. The process is getting easier," Fairland Town Council President Rick Daily said.
The 2014 budget request is for $82,648 and includes $8,448 in fire service contract and $4,600 in building improvements. In addition, town officials have budgeted $2,400 for road paving, $20,000 for paving and snow removal.
The town receives money from local road and street funds, motor vehicle taxes, ABC gallonage, cigarette taxes, property taxes, excise taxes and wheel taxes, as well as county economic development income tax and county adjusted gross income tax. Furthermore, the town receives racino money and an annual riverboat tax payment.
He said the racino funds will go toward three key areas in the town.
"We will use our racino funds for roads, drainage and to pay the land contract. Those are our primary concerns and we are trying to save as much as we can from our racino money," Daily said.
Fairland Clerk-Treasurer Chris Brinson told the council the town brought in approximately $19,000 in property taxes, which is down from year to year.
"Our revenues are down," she said.
Daily acknowledged that is a small concern, but maintains Fairland will be able to weather the storm.
