Star-Press Reports Muncie Schools Lost 44% of Tax Levy to Tax Caps in 2013

From the Muncie Star-Press:

Muncie Community School Corp. lost 44 percent of its property tax levy to tax caps in 2013.

“That is the second-highest percentage among school corporations in the state,” says Larry DeBoer, an economist at Purdue University.

The highest was Gary Community School Corp., which lost 45 percent.

The 2013 property tax levy for Muncie totaled $19.9 million, but tax credits from the tax caps totaled $8.7 million, or 44 percent of the levy.

Anderson Community School Corp.’s loss ranked seventh and New Castle Community School Corp.’s loss ranked 11th.

According to the state’s Legislative Services Agency, tax cap credits in Delaware County this year totaled $42 million, or 33 percent of the levy.

That was the largest percentage in the state. The state average was 10.9 percent, but the median or typical county saw credits equal to 4.2 percent of its levy.
