From the Northwest Indiana Times:
The Lake County treasurer's office will be open Monday and have extended hours Tuesday, the final day property taxes can be paid on time.
County Treasurer John Petalas said although the rest of county government will be closed Monday in honor of Veterans Day, his offices will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Lake County Government Complex, 2293 N. Main St., Crown Point, or the satellite county courthouses at 401 Broadway in Gary and 232 Russell St. in Hammond.
He said his office also will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Those who aren't disputing their tax bills can avoid lines by paying at Indiana branch offices of these banks: Fifth Third Bank, American Savings FSB, Centier Bank, Chase Bank, Citizens Financial Bank, DeMotte State Bank, First Federal Savings and Loan, First Midwest, First National Bank, BMO Harris Bank N.A., Horizon Bank, Lake Federal Bank FSB, MainSource Bank, Peoples Bank and Tech Credit Union.
Property owners can pay by credit card online by logging on at the county government website at www.lakecountyin.org and then clicking on the treasurer's office link. Petalas said property owners also can use the Voice Max payment system by calling (800) 601-1059. Credit cards are not accepted in his office.
Petalas said a nonrefundable, 3 percent fee is charged by the credit card company, not county government, in addition to taxes owed to process the payment. He said taxpayers can avoid the 3 percent fee by using an echeck, which costs 75 cents per transaction.
Petalas warns residents to be patient if they call his office with questions as the deadline approaches. The office generally is swamped by hundreds of callers at that time, and callers often are put on hold for an extensive period, he said.
