Star-Press Reports Delaware County Treasurer Charged with 46 Felony Counts

From the Muncie Star-Press:

Delaware County government’s highest-ranking financial officer has been charged with 46 felony counts and one misdemeanor, and authorities allege he stole county funds.

John Dorer was charged with one count of theft, one count of official misconduct, one count of conversion and 44 counts of failure to properly deposit public funds. Of the charges, 46 are felonies and one is a misdemeanor.

The 50-year-old official turned himself in to Indiana State Police at the Delaware County Justice Center shortly after 2 p.m., after the prosecutor’s office filed the charges in Delaware Circuit Court 1.

Authorities did not include a total dollar figure for the amount they allege Dorer stole.

Dorer, a Democrat, was elected county treasurer in 2008 and re-elected in 2012. If convicted of as much as one felony count, he can no longer hold office.

County Prosecutor Jeffrey Arnold, whose office filed the criminal charges, also said he had filed a civil lawsuit against Dorer requested by the Indiana State Board of Accounts that is aimed at removing Dorer from office.
