Times Reports Merrillville Approves Tax Abatements for Companies

The Town Council made multiple economic development decisions Tuesday night.
The panel approved 10-year real estate tax abatement requests for two businesses and finalized its contribution to the South Shore Line commuter rail expansion.
ImageFirst Healthcare Laundry Specialists and American Fireproofing and Millennium Interiors are the businesses that submitted the tax abatement requests.
ImageFirst intends to expand its facility near 86th Place and Louisiana Street in Merrillville.
The estimated cost of the project is about $950,000, according to town documents.
The expansion would create 12 new jobs at the business.
A new 18,000-square-foot building would be created in the 9800 block of Georgia Street for American Fireproofing and Millennium Interiors, town documents state. The building would be in the AmeriPlex at the Crossroads development.
The cost of the project would be about $900,000. American Fireproofing and Millennium Interiors would create eight to 15 new jobs, according to town documents.
Each of the tax abatement requests received unanimous support from the council.
