From the Evansville Courier & Press:
As the fiscal year nears its end, the Evansville City Council plans a public hearing Monday regarding some unbudgeted expenses for 2012.
City officials don't expect to spend the whole advertised amount, $5 million. Controller
Russ Lloyd Jr. said the published figure is purposely exaggerated because the city can't legally go above it.
Some unbudgeted items in the city's plans — about $1.2 million worth — are to be covered by an unexpected windfall of County Option Income Tax revenue which Mayor
Lloyd Winnecke announced last week.
Those include:
$500,000 to the city engineer's office for sidewalk repairs.
$250,000 for roof repairs at six Evansville Fire Department stations (Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 14).
$125,000 for repairs at fire station No. 14 to address recurring flooding.
$360,000 for federally-mandated "narrowbanding" of radios at the Transportation and Services Department and the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The city also plans to use unbudgeted Parks Department funds to cover a $235,882 operating deficit at The Victory. That deficit is to be corrected in the city's 2013 budget, according to officials.
Another transfer from the Parks Department, for $49,196, will go to the city's Other Pools account and be used on salaries and other costs needed to keep neighborhood pools open an extra week, and two pools open until Labor Day.
The public hearing is to be at 5:20 p.m. Monday in Room 301 of the Civic Center.
