Johnson County Reports Over a Thousand Property Tax Appeals Filed

From the Johnson County Daily Journal:

An update to property values and lingering concerns about the economy have led property taxpayers to appeal more than in recent years what the county says homes, businesses and land are worth.

This year, 1,061 appeals were filed with the county assessor’s office over what appraisers said properties were worth, more than double what was filed just two years ago. In 2010, 432 appeals were filed.

Last year, 895 appeals were filed, according to the county assessor’s office.

The assessment is the basis for property tax bills. So, if a property’s value goes up, the tax bill could also go up. A deadline to appeal assessments for 2012 was earlier this month.
