Johnson County Election Board to Consider Referendum to Merge Greenwood and White River Township

From the Johnson County Daily Journal:
...

The Johnson County Election Board is slated to discuss whether to allow a November referendum on the proposal to expand Greenwood’s borders to include most of the Center Grove area.

The board meets at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the voter registration office on the lower level of the Johnson County Courthouse, 5 E. Jefferson St., Franklin.

A referendum on the proposed merger failed to make it onto the ballot in 2010, but the group requested at the time that it be reconsidered for the next countywide election in 2012.

White River Township Board president Greg Rainbolt has asked that no referendum take place.

A majority of voters in both Greenwood and White River Township would have to approve a merger for it to take place.

If approved, Greenwood would extend its services and rules to the part of White River Township that’s not already in a city or town. Township residents would have to pay the city tax rate, could vote in city elections and would be eligible to serve on city boards.
