The Town of Morristown is considering an additional property tax to help with capital development.
A proposed measure would add an additional property tax in steps and would pay for a new fire station. The first year, a new tax of 2 cents for every $100 of assessed value, then the next year 3 cents and the third year on, 5 cents.
"If they approve it, it would be phased in over a three-year period," Morristown Clerk-Treasurer Don Roberts said at Wednesday's meeting.
Many cities and towns have such a tax, including Shelbyville.
"There's a series of projects it could be used for," Roberts said. "In this particular case it would be used for the fire station."
The council will consider the measure and will likely vote on it at the next town council meeting.
To implement the tax the town will have to hold a public meeting some time in July, Roberts said. The entire process will need to be finalized by Aug. 1. ...
