Richmond Common Council Questioning Effectiveness of Economic Development Corporation

From the Richmond Palladium-Item

Richmond Common Council's soul searching regarding the Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County continued in earnest Monday night.

Council members in recent months have asked for more information on EDC's expenditure of EDIT money and have asked publicly for an accounting of what that expenditure has produced in jobs, business expansions and new businesses.
"I am committed to the idea of a county-wide economic development effort, but I can't determine if we are getting good value for our dollars," said councilman Bruce Wissel. "We as a council are very protective of our role with taxpayer dollars, but I've found that there has not been a lot of communication from that organization."

Guiley said he also believes in a unified county economic development and said he also was slightly frustrated that the EDC has had four CEOs in the 12 years he has lived in the Richmond community.
He also said he felt the county-wide economic development effort has been "disjointed a little bit."

"We have to be smart about this and bring our current leadership together to pull together. I say we all get in a room and figure it out," he said.
The county and EDC are negotiating a contract for the coming year. The current contract runs out at the end of the year, and Guiley urged council members to do their part to make sure the contract is completed quickly.
