From the Richmond Palladium-Item:
Union County residents may voice their opinions on a proposed tax increase at a public hearing Tuesday.
The Union County Council is considering a 1.5-cent increase in the tax rate of the Cumulative Capital Development Fund. The increase would bring the tax rate to the maximum 3.3 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The tax increase would be effective for property taxes payable in 2013.
The hearing is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Union County Courthouse courtroom. The council will not make a decision on the proposed tax increase at the hearing, Council President Alan Alcorn said. The council is expected to vote on the issue at its regular meeting at 9 a.m. June 21, he said.
The higher tax rate would collect about $101,000 annually, nearly double the $53,736 it will collect in the fund this year, Auditor Gene Sanford. If the rate increase is approved, it can't be raised again because state law caps the rate at 3.3 cents.
Property taxes on a home with an assessed value of $100,000 could rise by $15.70 a year if the tax increase is approved, Sanford said.
