Townships' Tax Rates Increase for Fire Protection in Howard County

From the Kokomo Tribune:

If you live in Taylor or Harrison townships and didn’t get annexed, get ready — the tax rate you pay for fire protection may double.

And with fewer taxpayers to support those departments, an already dicey funding situation — particularly in Harrison Township — is about to get even rougher.

Tax revenues in Harrison Township next year are expected to cover about half of the township’s proposed fire budget.

About 46 percent of the township’s former tax base will receive fire protection from the city of Kokomo next year.

Despite losing so much tax base, Harrison Township officials are asking for roughly the same tax levy to pay for fire protection next year.

With fewer taxpayers to shoulder the burden, the share of the burden put on each taxpayer is expected to almost double.
...

According to the Howard County Assessor’s Office, the tax rate for fire protection in Harrison Township is supposed to increase by 89 percent next year, going from about 5.2 cents per $100 to 9.7 cents.

In Taylor Township, the fire rates are expected to increase by 68 percent, from 6.6 cents per $100 to 11.1 cents.
