Wayne County to Use Rainy Day Funds for Meijer Property Tax Refund

From the Richmond Palladium-Item:

Wayne County will dip into its Rainy Day Fund this fall to return about $500,000 to Meijer Stores as a result of that company’s appeal of its property tax assessment for the years 2006 through 2011.

County council last week tentatively approved the plan. Meijer had appealed its assessments for those years to the local Property Tax Board of Appeals, but the board upheld the assessments.

Meijer attorneys then appealed the ruling to the Indiana Board of Tax Review. County officials then determined that the Meijer property was assessed too high and adjusted the amount, from around $10 million to around $7 million.

Meijer has routinely appealed its assessment, including in 2006 when it appealed its 2002, 2003 and 2005 assessments. That appeal was upheld at the Indiana Board of Tax Review but was ultimately reversed by the Indiana Tax Court in 2010.

All taxing districts in the county had to refund a total of $545,076 plus $187,256 in property tax replacement credits.

Final action on the proposal to take the money from the Rainy Day Fund will come at the Wayne County Council’s Oct. 3 regular meeting.
