Allen County Council Reviews Proposed Tax Levies

From the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette:

Allen County Council members performed a non-binding review Wednesday of every taxing body’s proposed tax levy for next year.

The practice, required by state law, is an exercise in futility, not only because the council has no power to make any changes, but the numbers they were shown are preliminary numbers artificially inflated to ensure the entity is able to tax as much as possible. In addition, tax levies – by law – can only increase 2.8 percent.

Council members made a blanket recommendation that entities not increase their levy beyond what the law allows and that they spend cash balances before raising taxes.
