Seymour Community Schools Corp. Proposes Property Tax Increase

From the Seymour Tribune:

Seymour Community Schools Corp. is proposing a nearly 17 cent increase in its property tax rate to fund planned capital projects, pay off debt and operate its buses in 2013.

But that increase likely will be less when final budget approval comes from the state, business manager Nancy Lumley said.

The district has set an overall budget of $38.33 million for next year, up from the $35.76 million it has to work with this year.

A tax rate of 87.28 cents per $100 of assessed value is needed to levy $9.6 million for the district, Lumley said. The rest of the budget, which is made up of the general fund, is financed by state sales tax rather than through local property taxes. Funding is based on student enrollment.

General fund money is used to pay teacher and staff salaries and benefits as well as the day-to-day operations of the schools.

School officials conducted a public hearing on the budget at the regular monthly school board meeting Tuesday. No one spoke in opposition or in favor of the budget. The board is scheduled to adopt the budget in October.
