A decision by the Boone County Council to eliminate the county park tax levy next year could cost the Lebanon Parks Department 10 percent of its budget.
The council has decided to stop collecting the tax, which was .0027 cents per $100 of assessed valuation in 2010, raising about $110,000.
Boone County doesn’t have a parks department; however, the money is distributed through a formula based in part on population. In 2009, based on population numbers before the 2010 U.S. Census was finished, Lebanon received 46 percent of the money, and Zionsville 17 percent. Thorntown was given 5 percent, Jamestown 4 percent, Union Township 3 percent, Advance and Worth Township 2 percent each, and Whitestown 1 percent.
