News Reports Shelby County Adopts $25 Million Budget for 2014

From the Shelbyville News:

The Shelby County Council approved vote step increases and a 3 percent cost of living adjustment for county employees Tuesday when it adopted its 2014 budget.

Last year, the council approved the same in the 2013 budget after several years of hiring and pay freezes in many departments.

One additional employee has been budgeted for next year for the sheriff’s and auditor’s departments and the county jail.

The $24,851,351 budget is about $3.5 million more than 2013’s appropriated budget, with the biggest increases occurring in the sheriff’s department, the election board, commissioners, probation department and the highway department.

The sheriff’s department added $145,744, mainly due to the addition of a narcotics deputy, computer software support and uniforms and officer supplies.

Election board expenses increased its budget in personal services and supplies by nearly $60,000, the biggest increase coming from precinct board members which went from $8,000 to $30,000 for 2014.

The council approved $385,112 to the commissioners’ 2014 budget with the largest increase being $192,246 for retirement contributions.

The probation department’s budget increased from $492,283 this year to $523,812 with increases spread more or less evenly throughout expenses.

President Scott Asher read through the budget, highlighting areas where significant additions or deductions were in various departments.

There was little discussion about the changes. Budget discussions had begun Monday morning going through two revisions and reads before the final read and adoption Tuesday after the county council’s regular meeting.
