Herald-Times Reports Bloomington Budget Includes Excess Tax Levy that Might Not Come

The Bloomington City Council unanimously approved the city’s $35.6 million operating budget Oct. 9, but the amount doesn’t accurately reflect the expenditures, according to city Controller Sue West.

West said it’s inflated because of an excess tax levy the city has petitioned for from the Department of Local Government Finance. The city is owed $377,930 after an error two years ago in the county auditor’s report wrongly included IU Health Bloomington and churches in the certified net assessed value figures. Last year, the city requested the money but then incorrectly advertised the notice to taxpayers, so the funds were never made available.
