From the Muncie Star-Press:
Plenty of yellow buses were visible outside Central High School on Tuesday night, not parked in the lot but pictured on the T-shirts of referendum supporters who lined the walkway.
A rally of bus drivers, families and other supporters greeted people arriving for the final Muncie Community Schools town hall meeting with fliers, signs and chants of “Vote yes! Save our buses.”
The group was there in hopes of convincing Muncie residents to vote in favor of a $3.3 million seven-year referendum that would increase property taxes to continue to fund school bus service after this year. Without it, Muncie school officials have said, the district will no longer be able to transport kids to school.
Penni Taylor, a school bus driver and one of the organizers for the rally, said the issue is one of kids’ safety, a sentiment echoed by others there wearing “Vote yes” T-shirts and holding up signs along the Central walkway.
“It’s really about their safety,” said Taylor, who drives for South View Elementary and Wilson Middle schools. “They (kids) are what’s most important. ... We need to make sure everybody knows what it’s about.”
...
Though plenty of signs urging people to vote against the referendum are visible around town, no obvious disputes over the issue arose outside Central on Tuesday. One supporter holding a few last fliers as the time for the meeting drew near said no one she had approached had spoke out against the “Vote yes” stances; she just assumed those who opposed it were the ones who walked past without taking a paper or saying anything.
Once 6:30 p.m. arrived and the trickle of people going into the school had slowed, participants in the rally began to move inside as well.
