Kosciusko Chamber Pushes Repeal of Medical Devices Tax

From the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette:

The Warsaw Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce is urging members to contact their representatives in Congress to support a bill that would repeal the impending 2.3 percent tax on medical devices.

The Chamber is asking members to sign an online petition at www.no2point3.com. The House vote is expected today. The House Ways & Means Committee passed HR 436 on May 31.

Warsaw is home to the orthopedic industry’s Big Three manufacturers: Zimmer Holdings Inc., DePuy Inc. and Biomet Inc.

Various companies in the industry have warned of upcoming layoffs if the tax goes into effect, as scheduled, on Jan. 1.

President Obama plans to veto the bill if it passes both houses of Congress, the White House announced Wednesday.

Revenue from the tax has been designated to help fund the Affordable Care Act, which expands insurance coverage to more Americans.

White House officials contend that wider insurance coverage will translate to more demand for medical devices, helping offset the added tax.
