Residents angry about a proposed property tax hike gave the Union County Council multiple reasons Tuesday night why taxes shouldn't be increased.
The council had a public hearing in the courtroom on a proposed 1.5-cent increase in the Cumulative Capital Development Tax Fund. Only six residents attended the hearing and five were adamantly opposed to the increase.
The council will decide at its 9 a.m. meeting on June 21 whether to raise the tax rate to the maximum of 3.3 cents per $100 assessed property value. The increase would be $15 for a home with an assessed value of $100,000.
