Crown Point Expands East Side TIF District

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

A former factory site, a long-vacant greenhouse and a row of duplexes all will be encompassed by a new revitalization district on the city's east side.

The Redevelopment Commission on Monday agreed to create the revitalization district stretching along both sides of Indiana Avenue from just north of Monitor Street to just south of North Street.

Declaring the area a revitalization district, and adding it to an existing tax increment financing district, opens the door to economic development possibilities, Mayor David Uran said.

Included in the area are the site of the former Vesuvius steel plant on Porter Street, the vacant Lake County Greenhouse on North Street and a row of duplexes on the east side of Indiana Avenue.

The Vesuvius plant was demolished earlier this year.

The district would extend to near the city-owned sports complex along North Street, where a second phase of renovations is under way.

North Street, which becomes 109th Avenue east of Broadway, is becoming an important entrance to the city from a recently opened interchange at 109th Avenue and Interstate 65, Uran said.

Areas within the revitalization district "are at the heart of a gateway to the city," Uran said. "We don't want this to be the thing that breaks up the visionary process."
