Cost of On-Line Payment Option Cheaper for Bartholomew County Residents with Electronic Check through LoGO

From the Columbus Republic:

Compared to last year, more than twice the number of Bartholomew County residents paid their spring property tax installment online. Now, property owners can use the Internet to make those payments at a lower cost.

Bartholomew County Treasurer Pia O’Connor recently authorized Local Government Online Indiana to handle online payments. LoGO provides eCommerce application development and payment processing services to cities, towns and counties across Indiana.

“With the electronic check option, there’s only a dollar fee rather than the larger percentage costs you have to pay with a credit card,” O’Connor said. “This was the first year we’ve offered the e-check option. The big thing is that we’ve been able to reduce the cost to customers who choose that option.”

Last spring, the treasurer’s office processed almost 200 online tax payments that totaled more than $630,000. The new payment options have been made without the use of taxpayer dollars.

However, credit card users will not have the same low fee as those who pay by e-check. A recent court settlement allows major credit card companies and their vendors, such as the treasurer’s office, to add a surcharge to recapture fees.
