Morristown Looks to Add Capital Improvement Fund to Property Taxes

From the Shelbyville News:

The Morristown Town Council will have a public hearing during its next meeting to discuss a proposal for a new property tax.

The council is considering establishing a new capital improvement fund, which would mean an additional tax on property. The immediate plan is for the money to go toward a new fire station.

Many municipalities, including Shelbyville and Hanover Township, have the tax already.

It would add 2 cents for every $100 of property value the first year, 3 cents for every $100 the second year and 5 cents for every $100 the third year on.
"After the public meeting, we'll take it up for consideration," said Clerk-Treasurer Don Roberts.

The next meeting is 7 p.m. July 25.

The town council also moved, 3-0, to raise fees for solid waste pickup. Currently town residents pay $6 per month, though the cost is $6.50.
