State Orders Cuts to Yorktown's Budget

From the Muncie Star-Press:

The town of Yorktown is cutting $1.5 million from its 2012 budget under orders from the state.

Yorktown received a notice from the state in February that the town’s $6.2 million budget should be cut because state officials did not believe enough tax revenue would be produced to support that amount.

Since then, town officials have debated whether to appeal or make the cuts.

At Monday’s meeting, the town council voted to make the budget cuts.

Among the largest cuts was $517,760 from the Cumulative Fire Capital Outlay fund.

The department had planned to spend that money on a new fire truck or other equipment, but the money had not yet been spent. Other cuts include $10,000 from salaries and wages for the town manager’s office; $25,000 from the police department’s benefits and $15,000 from the clerk-treasurer’s office salaries and wages.

The majority of the cuts —$766,691 — will be taken from the general fund.

Clerk-treasurer Beth Neff said Monday the budget can be balanced so that no layoffs will need to take place.
