Union County's 2013 Budget Process Begins with Public Hearing September 20

From the Richmond Palladium-Item:

The Union County Council won’t begin work on the county’s 2013 budget until after its public hearing Sept. 20.

The council is scheduled to do non-binding reviews of the budgets of other taxing units in the county, including the school, at its Aug. 21 meeting, Auditor Gene Sanford said Thursday.

Following the public budget hearing in September, several budget workshops will be scheduled to review departmental budgets, Council President Alan Alcorn said.

The council is expected to adopt the 2013 budget Oct. 18, Sanford said.

Total assessed property values in the county have not been determined, Assessor Diana Baker said. Last year, the county’s assessed value, which impacts property tax rates, declined by $10 million due to some successful appeals and the decline in housing values.

The Indiana State Board of Accounts is currently working on the county’s 2011 audit, Sanford told the council, a process, he said, that’s “going well.”
