The Town Council is investigating the possibility of establishing a fire district, although some members say a district would cost more and be less efficient.
Dyer currently has a volunteer fire department in which members are paid per call and are considered town employees.

However, council President Jeff Dekker said he wants to further investigate the matter. Indiana statute says fire districts can be created either by landowners in a given area, at least 2 percent, or by a city or town.
The town would have to petition the Lake County Council, which would then hold a public hearing.
Fire districts have a board of trustees and have the ability to levy taxes and incur debt. Tax rates are established by the Department of Local Government Finance. Landowners also have the right to petition against the establishment of a district.
