Times Reports Hobart to Consider Abatement for Medical Office

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

A controversial $3 million tax abatement request the City Council has tabled several times may finally see some movement Wednesday.

The abatement would be for a medical/office center off 61st Avenue.

The request was tabled for a third time at the council's Sept. 4 meeting.

But at that session, City Councilman John Brezik, D-5th, said he had spoken to the attorney for the medical/office center and was told all financing is in place for the development.

A few other details needed to be worked out for the complex off of 61st Avenue, Brezik said.
The City Council earlier this spring unanimously decided to designate property at 6188 Marcella Blvd. as an economic revitalization area for the new medical/office center.

The second step in the process, a public hearing, was held June 19 for the 28,000-square-foot building, which will be called Hobart Square.

Several council members said they wanted appropriate traffic requirements in place before they would grant the 10-year tax abatement request.

Some of the proposed changes the council might add to the new tax abatement agreement include payment of a 15 percent abatement fee and the purchase by developers of adjacent land on 62nd Street within two years.
