From the Columbus Republic:
Bartholomew County residents can now receive property tax bills and statements electronically.
A new and voluntary paperless billing system approved by county commissioners at their Monday meeting aims to save the county money.
Indianapolis-based SRI, Inc., is under a three-year contract with the county to provide the email billing service.
County Treasurer Pia O’Connor said printing and mailing paper bills costs the county about $25,000 per year.
Each paper bill costs the county about 57 cents to print, prepare and mail while an electronic version will cost 40 cents, O’Connor said.
The real savings come from taxpayers who receive multiple bills, she said.
Electronic bills will be sent the same day paper versions are mailed, 15 days ahead of the May 10 payment due date.
Even county residents with escrowed property taxes can have their tax statements emailed to them.
The sign-up process is simple and available now, O’Connor said.
State legislators authorized Indiana counties to use electronic property tax bills in 2009 and Bartholomew County is among the first to do so.
