Porter County Completes General Reassessment On Time

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

"VALPARAISO | The Porter County Assessor's Department has wrapped up work on the 2012 general reassessment, following 16 months of on-site inspections, reviews and evaluations of more than 80,000 parcels.
...

The work began July 1, 2010, and is required to be completed by Thursday.

"On-time billing is a win for local government and for taxpayers," Snyder said. "It is my top priority."
When Snyder took over the office in January 2011, he said he found just 28 percent of the parcels had been inspected.

He set out to play catch up by hiring up to 30 part-time employees.

This effort was aided in March when the Porter County Council approved a special appropriation of $280,979 for the office. The money was part of nearly $500,000 appropriated to the assessor, auditor and treasurer to revamp operations, including further addressing longstanding tax collection problems.

The next general reassessment should not require anywhere near the number of people on the ground, Snyder said. That's a result of the county paying $138,533 this year to have overhead and multidimensional photographs taken of the county. The photographs will be accurate enough to allow his staff to measure structures without leaving their desks."
