From the Indianapolis Star:
"Indiana lawmakers have reached an agreement to phase out the state’s inheritance tax.
The plan would decrease the state’s inheritance tax by 10 percentage points each year starting from this past January until it is eliminated in 2022. The compromise was reached today, on the legislative session’s last day.
Republican Rep. Eric Turner, of Cicero, said that some families would begin to see the benefit immediately. Opponents said that the state could better use the money it was losing elsewhere.
House lawmakers approved the compromise 78-17 tonight and Senate lawmakers were expected to approve the phase-out later. Lawmakers approved a statewide smoking ban earlier in the day. But they were still working on more money for state fair victims and for full-day kindergarten."
