From the Northwest Indiana Times:
"A permanent funding source to complete and maintain Little Calumet River levees is on the verge of becoming law after the Republican-controlled Indiana Senate voted 50-0 for the plan Wednesday.
House Bill 1264, which now goes to the governor, requires Lake County property owners in the watersheds of the Little Calumet River and Burns Waterway to pay an annual per-parcel fee for levee work.
The fee varies based on how a property is used. Owners of residential parcels would pay $45 a year; agricultural, $90; commercial, $180; and industrial or utility, $360.
State Sen. Frank Mrvan, D-Hammond, told senators that a completed and well-maintained levee system will help prevent disasters like the 2008 region flood that damaged thousands of homes and cost the state $1 billion in economic activity."
