From the Northwest Indiana Times:
The City Council has given a two-year tax break to a local business planning to renovate a vacated car dealership.
Denarie Kane, the city's economic development director, said Hobart is one of the first cities in the county to offer the new tax break, available for vacant buildings in designated economic revitalization areas.
"We think this is a win-win," Kane said.
Midwest Service Center, 408 S. Shelby St., plans to buy and renovate the former Isakson Motor Sales.
The longtime car dealership, 3530 N. Hobart Road, closed two years ago when Chrysler Group LLC terminated agreements with more than 700 dealers nationwide.
Don Gilger, mechanical manager/managing partner for Midwest Service Center, said plans are to continue light manufacturing operations at the Shelby Street site and expand into the former dealership.
Mahmoud Mazaheri, president for Midwest Service Center, said about 50 people in skilled positions will be employed in the second building in the next five to six years.
Plans also include the addition of about $3 million in new equipment, Midwest Service Center officials said.
