From the Johnson County Daily Journal:
You might remember talk of a merger between Greenwood and White River Township.
If the details are fuzzy, that’s because the proposal last was considered two years ago.
But it’s back, sort of. The Johnson County clerk said the election board needs to decide, once and for all, whether the merger should go on the ballot.
You read that correctly. The Greenwood-White River Township merger issue from two years ago isn’t over.
The group that had been studying the merger missed a deadline that kept the issue off the ballot in 2010. After that, criticism of the study surfaced. Greenwood’s mayor said at the time that the cost and proposed tax rates the group was using weren’t realistic.
But the election board never took final action on the issue, Clerk Sue Anne Misiniec said.
“It’s a moot point for most people,” she said. “But it was open-ended and never totally resolved. It was left to be considered at the next general election, which would be this fall.”
She plans to send letters to Greenwood and the township to find out what both sides want to do. The election board would need to see confirmation that both the township and city would want a November resolution, and that potentially would require the city council and township board to vote on it again, she said.
“We want to confirm that they’re interested or not interested,” she said. “We want to make sure everyone is on the same page, so we don’t confuse everyone entirely by having a referendum.”
