Editorial Rates New Laws' Value and Effectiveness

Six years in the making, the new smoking ban covers most public places and businesses, with several notable exceptions including bars. It comes up short for those employees, but at least it's a start.

Same can be said for new laws that aim to deter nepotism and conflicts of interest in local and state government by prohibiting public workers from hiring and supervising relatives and prevent employees of local municipalities from serving in an elected position that sets the agency's budgets and salaries.

Hoosiers will soon judge whether a phase-out of inheritance tax and a change in child-support law work in their best interests.


The graded elimination of inheritance will reduce state revenue by more than $1 billion over the next decade.
