Floyd County Budget Frozen for 2013

From the Jeffersonville News and Tribune:

Most Floyd County employees have not received a pay raise for several years due to budget constraints. And that beat will likely continue in 2013.

The Floyd County Council held preliminary budget hearings Tuesday with office holders. While a final decision on budgets will be decided in September, one thing is clear — a scheduled pay raise next year will likely not be considered.

However, there may be some help along the way. Councilwoman Dana Fendley said the council would like to give employees a one-time bonus in 2013 if possible.

“We are trying to find money to give some kind of raise,” Fendley said. “We will do our best to do something. These people have gone years without a raise.”

But there are no guarantees. Floyd County has to fund two pending murder trials next year — David Camm and William Clyde Gibson III. And many counties across the state will feel the effects of property tax caps in 2013.

“The budgets are frozen,” said councilman Brad Striegel. “We are just going to have to wait and see where we fall with the 2013 tax caps. We have to wait and see what the state does to our budget.”

But Striegel said he hopes pay raises are built into the budget in 2014.

“I’m optimistic after next year we’ll be able to give raises,” he said.

The state cut $2 million from the 2012 budget, only to reimburse the county $2.2 million earlier this year. However, after paying out some of those funds to New Albany and other entities, Floyd County received only $800,000 of the $2.2 million.
