Gary Schools Saves $2 Million by Cutting 25 Administrative Positions

From the Northwest Indiana Times:

The Gary Community School Corp. will save more than $2 million by eliminating 25 administrative positions.

However, three of those positions will be extended through the end of this month, said Charmella Greer, Gary schools spokeswoman. The positions getting a 30-day reprieve are the director of Planning, Evaluation, Research Accountability; the director of Federal Programs/Grants/Students, Family and Community Services; and the Human Resources coordinator/compliance officer post.

The board approved a dozen cuts at Friday's special meeting. Last year, 13 administrative positions were eliminated but notifications weren't made in time. This year, those notifications were made, increasing the number of administrative cuts to 25.

A month ago, the district notified 169 teachers they could lose their jobs in the fall. The reduction-in-force letters are a legal formality to put teachers on notice they may be laid off. School officials have said the cuts in the administrative and teaching staff are the result of declining enrollment and funding inequities. Over the last four years, school leaders said they have had to cut nearly $50 million from the budget.
