From the Northwest Indiana Times:
The Town Council accepted a small land donation despite council President Randy Niemeyer's concerns about the precedent it might set.
The 35-by-72-foot parcel along Grimm Street in Meyer Manor was offered to the town because its owners can no longer keep up with property tax payments. The site adjoins a piece of property already owned by the town.
In response to Niemeyer’s questions, Town Administrator Ian Nicolini said the parcel has no obvious and immediate uses as a park or for public recreation. There are also no natural areas or wetlands on the property or next to it.
Niemeyer ultimately voted in favor of the donation despite his concerns about precedent.
If the town makes a practice of accepting parcels when the owners are behind on their tax bills “we could find ourselves in an interesting situation in the future,” he said.
